Here is what’s available:

Treasurer: Collect receipts and submit for reimbursement to Student Service Office, attend all general and board meetings

Communication Director: Coordinate all room reservations, Maintain and update facebook account , Photograph events, meetings, Respond to all outside email inquiries, Flyer postings on campus, ensure banner is present at all events, End of semester update to rotary club of boston website , Attend all general and board meetings

Social Director: Organize and execute one social event/month, attend all general and board meetings

2)Malaria Madness: Great job so far - This Friday at 8 PM we'll be partying at McFadden's at Fanueuil hall with live music and a comic act until 10PM (at which point all are welcome to stay/enjoy the bar).

3) Cheescakes Factory Fundraiser: April 5th is distribution day - contact Jamie (jamste@bu.edu) to help out in any shift from 4:30-7, or to get a flier to post at your workplace.

4) Dunk the Dean: April 21 Plans are underway, email Eva (evabk@bu.edu) to sign up to help on the day of, any shift from 11AM to 6PM. Also email if you have a local business you think might give a prize (small item or gift certificate) and I will get you a solicitation project.

5) Darfur Rally: April 29 Email Sylvia (sbaedorf@bu.edu) if you're interested in beting event staff or helping with logistics, communication or visual effects for the rally!

If you missed last nights meeting, here is what’s planned for the rest of the semester and how you can contribute:

March is Malaria Madness--- we are participating in a global fundraiser and with every $5 donation we get, we are one step closer to preventing someone from getting malaria. There will also be a social event fundraiser at the end of the month. Cheesecake Factory Holiday fundraiser is back—we are raising money for our own projects and to support international service projects. Advertising will begin 3/22 and pick up is schedule to be a couple days before the Easter Holiday. Saturday April 21st from 12-5 we will be hosting Dunk the Dean - a dunk tank festival featuring several good-natured faculty members, food, games, and music. Proceeds will provide materials and equipment for setting up an oral health clinic in the Kashmir region of Pakistan. We need help with soliciting community donations, promotion, and staff for the day of so contact Eva if you want to help- evabk@bu.edu. No previous carnival running experience is necessary.

Plans for a huge city-wide Darfur event are already in the works for April 29. We are working with student organizations all over Boston and under the guidance of the MA Coalition to Save Darfur (www.savedarfurma.com) focusing on implementing peacekeeping troops and targeting BU to divest from Fidelity. Creative thinkers, investigative journalists and activist are needed to be on our planning committee – email Sylvia at sbaedorf@bu.edu. NOTES FROM THE FIRST GENERAL MEETING
Wednesday, January 24, 2007

*There was approximately 50 people and our club advisor in attendance
*Pizza and homemade brownies were served – if you weren’t there you totally missed out!
*15 people signed up and paid dues for the semester already!

Jirair, Rotaract President, spoke a little about what Rotaract is and what the club accomplished last semester:

Rotaract is an international program of Rotary International for young professionals who want to make a difference. There are 7088 clubs in 150 countries worldwide.
Last semester we volunteered in the community by creating a World AIDS Day display, holding a Blood Drive, a Darfur town hall meeting, conducting a cheesecake fundraiser, toiletry drive, and much more.

Jirair spoke about the focus of BUSPH Rotaract:
~Service- thru local community service and international projects/fundraising
~Education- thru guest lectures and workshops for professional development
~Friendship- thru socials events in order to meet new people and make new friends

Minutes from the 1st Rotaract Board Meeting of the Spring 2007 semester, which took place on Sunday, January 21

All new board members were introduced – every board member’s position and responsibilities were explained to the group.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS:
Eva Koehler – Community Service Officer
Nicole Daley - Community Service Officer
Katherine Horan – Social Director
OTHER NEW LEADERS/ NEW POSITONS:
Katina Montez – Historian
Susan Bollinger – Webmaster

MEMBERSHIP: In order to be a member, one must be a graduate student enrolled at BU, one must complete a Rotarct application and pay dues of $10.00 (each semester that one belongs to the club).
As part of membership a Rotarctor is entitled to (3) - 90 minute workshops geared toward professional development. The board spoke about possible ideas for these workshops such as grant writing. Last semester these workshops were a huge success.

MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR THE SPRING 2007 WERE DISCUSSED:

~To coordinate activities with other student groups on both campuses (establish connections between Dental, medical and GMS students)
~To further strengthen the bond between the Boston Rotary and BUSPH Rotarct (create opportunities for networking with Rotarians and other Rotarct groups)
~To establish new and more effective ways of communications (Facebook Account)

SOCIAL AND SERVICE GOALS FOR SPRING 2007 SEMESTER WERE DISCUSSED:

~To hold at least one Social/ Service Event per month

We started with a presentation from Brigit and Joe Collins, who run an anti-trafficking NGO in Nepal called Friends of Maiti Nepal (http://www.friendsofmaitinepal.org/ ) We discussed how Rotaract will raise $1000 for this organization by selling Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes at a significantly discounted price just in time for Thanksgiving. If you would like to sign up to help with the process, please email Jamie directly (jamie.stevenson@gmail.com). More information about the fundraiser will be emailed to everyone next week.

We also talked about showing the Emmy-nominated movie about their work called “The Day My God Died” to the whole school so I booked L112 from 12-1:30 on Thursday, November 9. We’ll have a table set-up that afternoon to take cheesecake orders after the movie. Mr. Collins is buying pizza for everyone!

Other things that are going on:
Friday 11/3 from 5-8pm is your second opportunity to serve with Community Servings. If you have not signed up yet, please email Jessica, jkraft@bu.edu, to see if we have any room left.

Tuesday 11/7 is skill-building workshop #2: Networking Like a Rock Star from 12:30-2pm in L303. If you need to sign up, email jirair@bu.edu, there are six seats left.

Wednesday 11/8 Rotaract and IHO are hosting two speakers from International Medical Corps and Project Hope from 12-1. Check it out if you still need a practicum idea or just want to learn about ways to create excitement and meaning in your life. Lunch will be served and I will let you all know as soon as we have a room reserved.

Thursday 11/16 is skill-building workshop #3: Program Evaluation in a Nutshell from 12:30 to 2pm in R110. RSVP to jirair@bu.edu

All board members were formally introduced and backgrounds were shared.

Our President, Jirair, gave a retrospective overview of the history of Rotaract.
Rotary is 100 years, 160 countries, 1.2 million Rotarians, 30,000 clubs.
Rotary Club of Boston is our sponsor.

Our club was founded in 2002.
Justin, returning Treasuer, gave an update/overview of past activities.

Jirair encouraged all board members to focus on the three pillars/ goals of the club - (SEF) Service, Education and Friendship.

Service: Club plans to organize one Community Service event per month.

Education: Club plans to organize a one-hour hour talk per month, workshops and a final surprise and impressive speaker during the first week of December.

Friendship: Club plans to organize one social event per month and one large-scale social event after finals.

Discussed ways of providing professional development for new members. – (workshops by BU faculty members, grant writing, ways to get connected).

Discussed our club website and the blog as well as the yahoo group.
FOLLOW-UP ITEM: Jirair to start a new yahoo group and send notice to old members.

1. Donations
Everyone present agreed that we would contribute $500 to each organization. This will leave Rotaract with $600. Some of this money will go towards a plaque for Christopher’s thanking them for their continued support.

2. Gambia Group
We still do not have word from members of the Gambia group, if anyone has any connections with these girls please let them know that we are trying to contact them. Rotary funded their trip and would like a report on the project.

3. ZEBS Project

1. Announcements

Treasurer’s report – we currently have about $1600, this includes the money that we raised for the two fundraisers.

Rotary International Meeting – they wanted to know about the Gambia project, they never received any follow up report. Regarding the Guatemala project, they will go through with the provision of generators for the water pumps.

The focus for Rotary International is the polio vaccine, provision of clean water and now computers. There was a group at the meeting who had started their own NGO focused on advanced technology. They are interested in providing internet access to remote locations by having a motorcycle that has WIFI drive by rural communities to activate their internet connection so messages can be sent and received.

2. Plan for the future

We should see if Rotary would be willing to match the money we raise for the two organizations

The possibility of sponsoring a practicum student to go help with these organizations.

Need to define the Togo project – main need is furnishing of their clinic

Paul Gallagher – started Rotaract - donates medical supplies abroad – pgallagher@townisp.com ; see if he might have leads or ideas on how we might get the Kara clinic equipped. – Kim will take charge of this.

Work on getting Gambia Project Presentation – Justin will ask them, they should provide power point and script – to be presented at the next meeting

Kevin in Kara Togo – Rotary club – have the connection already made (Pascal at Boston Rotary speaks French – we should illicit his help in getting Kara Togo’s assistance – express interest to partner to support AED). Maybe Pascal can write on our behalf. Get KT support, then Rotary support, then download grant.

AED needs approx. $39,000 to cover medication expenses for the year.

We could raise money through running a 5K race – get people to support pledges

3. Future talks

Joel and Bruce – would be great as future speakers. They worked in South Africa studying the impact of HIV/AIDS on non-profit businesses – CARE international funded them. Joel is a returned Peace Corps volunteer from Tanzania and Bruce had volunteered in China. Both would be interesting to talk to on a chitchat level. Kim will contact him.

4. Dinner – Desert and PH attendance

The International Health Career Dinner is on March 29th. Rotaract will be providing the desert and will be responsible for recruiting Public Health Students.

1. Circle of Health International

The previous fundraiser raised $73.00; we discussed options for having this amount matched by Rotaract or outside sources.

Sarah, the founder of COHI and Adam will be giving a talk on Thursday, March 3. They will discuss the organization and their recent experiences working in Sri Lanka with Tsunami victims.

2. AED-Togo ‘Hope for Tomorrow’

AED-Togo was given a grant from USAID to pay the initial costs for building an anti-retro viral treatment clinic. These funds were not intended to cover long term expenses, such as paying for salaries and medical supplies, which is where they are currently in need of additional funding.

Our next fundraiser, on March 3, will be to raise money for AED – Togo.

3. Fundraiser

For our next fundraiser, on March 3, we will be selling scones, muffins and doughnuts. The scones and muffins will be donated from Christopher’s Café and the Doughnuts will be from Krispy Kreme.

We need to make signs and have people volunteer to sit at the table. We will be tabling from 7am to 10am.

4. Rotaract Banner

Justin Pendarvis has agreed to take charge of getting us a banner, which we will be able to hang up during fundraisers, meetings and events.

5. Report of Rotary Centennial Dinner

Last week Rotaract members Justin and Kim attended the Rotary Centennial District Dinner at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Dan Moores was the event speaker; he provided historical comments on Rotary International.

6. Next Year

Although there are still a few months left in the semester, we need to start thinking about who will be taking over the officer positions next year. Most of the current officers will be graduating this May, so anyone interested in taking on an executive role next year should start attending the officer meetings.

1. Introductions
We started off the meeting with Introductions. Each person was asked to give their name and what they would not be able to pass up if they saw it for sale in the lobby.

--> Hot chocolate (with marshmallows and whip cream), coffee….. and breakfast foods seem to be the most popular

2. AED Hope for Tomorrow (Kim)

Kim gave an overview of AED, which is a non-profit, non-governmental organization in Togo, West Africa focused on providing support to individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

-Currently they are in the process of starting up a new clinic, so need is high.
- One of their main focuses is maternal to child transmission (they want to set up a curriculum
in this area)
-This semester we will be doing fundraisers to provide them with financial assistance.
-Although medical supplies are needed, financial assistance would probably be easiest for us to
provide and of most use to them.

3. Clothes arrived in Swaziland for AIDS orphans!

Justin reported that the 8 huge boxes of clothes Rotaract sent to AIDS orphans in Swaziland last year (collected from a clothing drive) actually made it! They sent a card and pictures which we will be posting on the Rotaract website.

4. Fundraiser ideas

We discussed options for things to sell for fundraising.

-Pizza Fundraiser (Pizza and soda)
$5.00 for 2 slices and a soda
New York Pizza, purchase pizzas for $7.50 each
-Christopher’s (Coffee and Scones/Muffins) – all food is donated
-Trader Joes – Chocolate – we need to talk to them about supporting non-profits
-Nalgene Bottles – We could have a logo for Rotaract or one of the two organizations we
are supporting.
-Team Rotaract à Ask people to sponsor us to do a walk or run, turn it into your own
pledge drive (march 6th there is a half marathon)

Social: Pumpkin Lighting: October 23 from 11 am -9 pm. Let’s help Camp Sunshine break the world record of smashing lit pumpkins (currently help by Keene N.H. at 28.952 pumpkins). We can help by volunteering at this event (for part or all of the day). For more info about the Pumpkin Festival, see www.lifeisgood.com. We’ll make this a social event for Rotaract by meeting up after the event to go grab a bite to eat and hang out. Mia handed out sign-up sheets. Service Activities Lined Up
□ “Making strides against breast cancer” walk, Sunday October 17, 8 am - noon. For the 6th year, the BUSPH will be sponsoring a team for the American Cancer Society’s "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk. The event, a 5 mile walk along the Charles River, is Sunday, October 17th. Our team will meet in the morning (time TBD) directly in front of the Hatch Shell.

Guatemala Project
Global Village Engineers (GVE): Chris Shimkin, the Founder and Executive Director of Global Village Engineers, presented the mission and current projects of GVE. GVE is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that uses volunteer engineers to coordinate with non-profits, community groups, and other groups, to support sustainable development projects. They are community based, which focuses on empowerment, participation, education and respect for local people, rather than acting as a distant and powerful engineering authority. Some of their projects include: levee construction in El Salvador and a hydropower project in Cambodia with Oxfam America. Another newer project is ICEHAP (Indian Country Environmental Assessment Training Project), which includes public health workers and other disciplines in assessing biological, chemical or physical environmental problems in the Native American communities. The Guatemala Project:
Global Village Engineers went to Salcajá, Guatemala in February 6-9, 2004 to conduct an engineering needs assessment. Some major problems:
1. Grey water drainage (standing water and kitchen waste). GVE recommends to fill drainage ditches with gravel and cover with soil or sand.
2. Rooftop water tanks. GVE recommends replacing the old tanks with black plastic tanks which allow solar heating.
3. Cross connections: incoming water supply pipes were lying directly under water waste pipes. GVE found and repaired several leaks.
4. Waste water disposal. GVE recommends they send waste water to nearby waste water treatment plant.
5. Water supply during power outages. GVE recommends either elevated tanks or generator.

Current status: We need to resurrect this project! The grant is written and funding is available. Now we just need motivated people who want to re-establish contact with GVE and the orphanage, put together a public health water education plan for several weeks, and go down to implement it!

Social: The September Social at Castle Island was great fun- lots of kite flying and relaxing. The "Life is Good" Pumpkin Festival is to raise money for Camp Sunshine, a non-profit camp/retreat for terminally ill children and their families. The festival is on Saturday. They need volunteers on Friday, the 22nd to: distribute pumpkins, set up pumpkins, stake pumpkins into the ground on pathways, and distribute promotional material. Volunteers on Saturday the 23rd will: distribute, light, carve and count pumpkins, man merchandise booth/sales, and for activities support (parade, pie eating contest, etc.). Guatemala Project
Brief History: The Guatemala Project began 5 years ago after Mary Drake came back from doing a needs assessment at an orphanage there. She found several nutritional and disease problems associated with the poor water quality. She came to Rotaract who helped coordinate with Global Village Engineers. Where we are now: The grant is written and should be in place for funding for 5 people to leave for 6 weeks. All we need are committed people who want to go to design and implement an education curriculum on water sanitation. Spanish speakers are preferable, but may not be required. We now need to identify interested students and develop a selection process before we start working on the education curriculum. There also may be a bit more fundraising to do.
Jackie will talk with Scott in the Practicum office- this may be a fabulous practicum…?
Come to the next general meeting on October 12 to hear from the Global Village Engineer and talk more about this project, especially if you’re interested in going!

Rotaract Meeting Minutes, 9/14/04

We had close to 30 students from all MPH concentrations attend our kick-off meeting. Pizza was enjoyed by all courtesy of Jackie's efforts! (Thanks Jackie!) At 6:15pm, Joe opened the meeting for a welcome and a brief summary of the purpose and history of the club. People introduced themselves.

Followed by a discussion on opportunities:
-Revitalize Guatemala Project
-Executive Committee Openings
-Group chose first Social - Kite Flying & Frisbee Event for Sunday Afternoon, Sept. 26, 2 - 4pm @ Castle Island

Then, time was given to receive ideas about possible service activities people would like the club to undertake.
Ideas suggested included:
□ Habitat for Humanity
□ Pulling together AIDS Education Packets
□ Helping www.MoveOn.org Get our the vote campaign
□ Spanish Speakers Pen Pal for Chilean Village Teens
□ Filling Wish-lists for needing kids/persons
□ Toiletries Drive similar to Operation Santa
□ Linking with Rotary Club in Nepal to assist them with Project Fund raising (one student’s Father or relative is a member of this club)

Treasurer, May, then explained about Rotaract Membership, which included Membership Applications ($10 per semester) - and distributed applications and collected dues. A brief report on the Club's financial health was stated - some $600 in funds plus $300 from the SPH are available to the Club.

The formal time ended @ 5:45pm and people came up to sign there name under different flip charts indicating an interest in:
Guatemala Project - Justin to follow up with those interested in this group

Several expressed interest in joining the Executive Committee, including:
