Check out the updated Rotaract website: http://people.bu.edu/rotaract/home.html
Social: November pot luck? Possibly at Anna’s house in Allston.
Projects in the works:
-Pumpkin Festival: we missed the volunteer application deadline (10/10/04) but encourage people to check it out- sounds like a fun event.
-Big Brothers, Big Sisters: October 30 party. Noon-5 pm. Roxbury Community College.
-Rosie’s Place: 4-6 people. Sat 11/6 for lunch 11-1:30. Sat 12/4 for lunch 11-1:30.
-Community Servings. There are lots of way we could get involved: drivers on Saturday once a month, special holiday service times, box labeling on Saturday 11/13/04 from 9am-noon, basket assembling/sorting/delivering in December.
Guatemala.
What is the next step on our end?:
• Form a Guatemala committee to meet outside of the Rotaract meetings and work on all of these issues.
• Keep working on the grant
• What is our niche? - - education? We want to make sure our part of the project doesn’t get left out or ignored.
• Conference call with Mary and Rotaract. How do we do this?
• Continue to attend Rotary International Meetings
• Have an information session for the general SPH community once we’ve unscrambled some info.

Rotaract Meeting Minutes, 10/12/04
Social: Pumpkin Lighting: October 23 from 11 am -9 pm. Let’s help Camp Sunshine break the world record of smashing lit pumpkins (currently help by Keene N.H. at 28.952 pumpkins). We can help by volunteering at this event (for part or all of the day). For more info about the Pumpkin Festival, see www.lifeisgood.com. We’ll make this a social event for Rotaract by meeting up after the event to go grab a bite to eat and hang out. Mia handed out sign-up sheets. Bring them to the next meeting so that we can all sign up together. If you didn’t get a sign up sheet, come to the next meeting to fill one out. Email Mia for more info (ramirezm@bu.edu).
Reports:
Jackie, President: We are welcome to attend the Rotary International Meeting on every second Thursday of the month. The next meeting is this Thursday, 10/14/04. The meeting is on the 4th floor of the Park Plaza at 6 pm. Jackie will be going, so email her if you’re interested in coordinating and going together (jackieaj@bu.edu).
May, Treasurer: Please turn in your membership form and semester dues ($10). Please bring to the next meeting if you haven’t turned them in already. May will have extra membership forms at the next meeting for you to fill out.
Service Activities Lined Up
□ “Making strides against breast cancer” walk, Sunday October 17, 8 am - noon. For the 6th year, the BUSPH will be sponsoring a team for the American Cancer Society’s "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk. The event, a 5 mile walk along the Charles River, is Sunday, October 17th. Our team will meet in the morning (time TBD) directly in front of the Hatch Shell.
Visit the event website at http://www.acsevents.org/faf/r.asp?t=3&i=54460 to join the "Boston University School of Public Health" Team (there is no registration fee since you’ll be part of the team) or to make a donation. Once at the website, click on "Sign Up to Fundraise Online" on the left, read and push “I agree” and then choose to "Join a Team". Find “Boston University School of Public Health” on the list, fill out the information and register. If you have any trouble or have any questions, please contact Maggie Samuels at msamuels@bu.edu
□ Big Brothers/Big Sisters. It may be too late for us to participate as a team in their Halloween event (especially since we’re doing the Pumpkin lighting). They are having a party from 2-4 pm (volunteers needed from 12-5) on October 30 and need people to help set up, decorate and cleanup at the Roxbury Community Center. If you are available, contact Jackie for more info (jackieaj@bu.edu).
Guatemala Project
Global Village Engineers (GVE): Chris Shimkin, the Founder and Executive Director of Global Village Engineers, presented the mission and current projects of GVE. GVE is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that uses volunteer engineers to coordinate with non-profits, community groups, and other groups, to support sustainable development projects. They are community based, which focuses on empowerment, participation, education and respect for local people, rather than acting as a distant and powerful engineering authority. Some of their projects include: levee construction in El Salvador and a hydropower project in Cambodia with Oxfam America. Another newer project is ICEHAP (Indian Country Environmental Assessment Training Project), which includes public health workers and other disciplines in assessing biological, chemical or physical environmental problems in the Native American communities. For more information about GVE, see www.gvengineers.org .
The Guatemala Project:
Global Village Engineers went to Salcajá, Guatemala in February 6-9, 2004 to conduct an engineering needs assessment. Some major problems:
1. Grey water drainage (standing water and kitchen waste). GVE recommends to fill drainage ditches with gravel and cover with soil or sand.
2. Rooftop water tanks. GVE recommends replacing the old tanks with black plastic tanks which allow solar heating.
3. Cross connections: incoming water supply pipes were lying directly under water waste pipes. GVE found and repaired several leaks.
4. Waste water disposal. GVE recommends they send waste water to nearby waste water treatment plant.
5. Water supply during power outages. GVE recommends either elevated tanks or generator.
See their report for more information. http://www.wego.to/guatemala/
Current status: We need to resurrect this project! The grant is written and funding is available. Now we just need motivated people who want to re-establish contact with GVE and the orphanage, put together a public health water education plan for several weeks, and go down to implement it!
Next General Meeting: Tuesday, October 26, 5 - 6pm.
Meetings are held every second Tuesday. The executive committee meets on off Tuesdays.
All meetings in L-414.
